Jia Wei and I drifted toward the electronics corner, where bright screens looped the same demo again and again. Inside a glass case, the latest game console sat on display, clipped to a thin cable. Above the aisle, a black dome camera blinked a tiny red dot.
A salesperson stepped away to answer a question. Jia Wei’s hand moved quickly. He lifted the demo console, and I heard a soft click. The cable slackened, and in one smooth motion he slid it into the pocket of his hoodie. He didn’t even look around. My stomach dropped.
